Hey guys...Northwest Haiti Christian Mission has missionary blogs on their website...Vicki is one of the missionaries that is living in st. louis de nord that we hit if off with the first trip...and it turns out she went to Chansolme with our team...so check out what she wrote...it's great:
We spent last Thursday and Friday in Chansolme. This is a very poor community about an hour from the mission. We teamed up with Northside Christian Church from New Albany, Indiana to help with the Neighbor’s Project, vacation Bible and school and a soccer clinic.
The Neighbor’s Project was all about finding out the needs of the community and how the mission can better serve them. We completed a 4 page survey with the families as we went door to door… or hut to hut…. and got to visit with the families. We divided into several different teams and got a lot of territory covered. Jill, Drew and Cody were team leaders. The families welcomed us and would try to round up chairs for us to sit in as we visited. We found out how many people lived in each home, if they went to Church, if they had a Bible, if they could read or write, their income, etc. Most families had at least 10 – 15 people living in the same home, no running water, no electricity and very little income. So many in that community are still trying to recover from the 4 devastating hurricanes last August. Some lost their homes, livestock and gardens. We had the opportunity to invite them to the Revival going on at the mission church that week and to witness and pray with them.
We also helped with VBS and a soccer clinic. Cody, Parker, Drew and Stephanie helped with soccer drills. After the soccer clinic was over, Cody and Parker played soccer with the Haitians. Cody stayed back on defense and cheered Parker on to score a goal – which left the Haitians speechless….. literally speechless…. when he scored and then still standing in amazement of Parker’s goal, the Haitians clapped and cheered!!! They all jumped in the river after the game to cool off and clean up!
Although Cindy is not a Dentist, she was a Dentist in Chansolme for 2 days. She saw 150 patients and gave out hundreds of toothbrushes and toothpaste. She held her clinic outside under a tree in the shade. She was very busy as she served each of her patients.
That night when we all got ready to go to bed, we only had 34 mattresses to sleep nearly 60 people. We had anticipated a delivery earlier in the day of more mattresses, but the truck got stuck in St Marc and could not make it to Chansolme. So, some of the kids got 2 mattresses and slept 3 people per mattress by putting them together and when it was time for everyone to lay their head down, everyone was laying on a mattress. Drew said it was like Jesus feeding the 5,000 but instead it was Jesus sleeping the 60 with only 34 mattresses! The guys moved the little wooden benches and slept outside on the ground under the tarp – otherwise known as the Church building.
The next day, we played in the river with lots of kids. The river was very muddy but we had a great time jumping and splashing with the kids!! Drew was a big hit with the kids, on dry land and in the water! The kids wore him out playing and running and tackling him.
It has been so neat to watch this BACC team engage here and to embrace the people and be His hands and feet!
